STRADDIE

November 12th, 2008

Straddie was amazing.

We (Me, Freya, Laura and Natalie) camped at Cylinder beach for a week of fun and great memories. Each day we woke up to the twittering of birds (annoying crows) and we spent each evening wandering the sandy shores of Stradbroke Island. While the weather wasn’t exactly ideal, the setting and the people definitely made up for the rain and gloom.

We began our trip at Cleveland; Laura’s mum delivering us to the ferry after we finished our last day of school. Here we conversed with Will, a good friend of Laura’s mum’s and when the ferry came; we all boarded for the holiday of a lifetime. The ferry trip was a rather rough, as storm clouds gathered over the sunny island. We arrived at Dunwich and took the bus straight to the campsite, which is right on the beach. We settled into our campsite and then wandered around the campsite, all the memories of our past trip flooding back. Everywhere we looked, Laura and I remembered a funny moment or happy memoir of our last trip to Straddie with the gold coast, lifesaver (!) guys. And as we wandered down to the beach, we reminisced on those times, let go, and let another Straddie trip begin. The next week was filled with walks on the beach, UNO games, swimming, running in the rain, sitting on the rocks, making new friends and many deep and meaningful conversations. Each day was a new adventure, and many nights of rain meant that sleeping conditions weren’t always ideal. We consumed various packets of lollies each evening and often found ourselves falling asleep with stomach aches. Our struggles throughout the week and our battles with the wet and collapsing tent meant we learnt many new things about each other. But our friendships only grew stronger through the many episodes of the week. And fond memories of our holiday at Stradbroke Island will last forever. :)

Internet Safety

October 30th, 2008

Staysafe.org is site designed for teenagers that aims to educate them about staying safe whilst working online. It covers information about being aware of the dangers of online social networks, and how to best stay protected from online predators by following a few simple steps in order to keep their details private.

This site acknowledges that social networks are a normal part of a teenager’s life, in the technological revolution that is currently occurring, and that while it is a beneficial and fun activity; it does involve risks and possible predators. But in ensuring that your personal details and privacy is maintained, teenagers can stay safe online.

From the advice outlined on this site, I have created a list of my 5 top tips:

  1. Protect your personal information. Never give out or include information such as your surname, age, location, phone number, email address or credit card number on your blog or profile.
  2. Be aware that any picture or videos that you post do not give out personal details that would allow a predator to gain information about you.
  3. Remember that as soon as you post anything on the internet, it cannot be deleted. Consider this before you post information or other content. Never post anything that would offend someone, or that you could possibly regret in the future.
  4. Remember that you can never be sure that someone is who they tell you are. Never say anything that would reveal information about yourself unless you are positive that you know who they are. If someone sends you nasty or bullying messages, or says something that makes you feel uncomfortable, block them immediately. Make a note of where and when you received it, and report it to the website you received it from, and to your parents. If someone makes physical threats, contact the police.
  5. Make sure the site you are using is trustworthy, and allows password protection. Ensure that you read the site’s privacy policy, and never sign up to a site that you do not trust.

Some other tips for internet safety are:

·         Remember that any photo that you send of yourself over the phone can be edited and changed accordingly. Never send a photo that you would be uncomfortable showing to anyone.

·         Never organise to meet someone that you don’t know over the internet or phone.

·         Be considerate – only send the kinds of messages and pictures you would be happy to receive.

I would give this internet safety site 3½ out of 5 stars. It gives good and detailed information about how to stay safe on the internet, while also having fun. Its rating could be improved by creating a layout more appealing to its audience so that its aim could be better achieved.
